Have You Ever Wanted to Learn the Style of Sword Play?
Cedar City, Utah, January 9-April 30th, 2018 -- This Sword Play Project was inspired by the SUU EDGE Program, The person who did this project dedicated 40+ Hours to this Edge Project to give service in a creative way that can teach others a new skill.
The SUU boffering club, hosted by Russell Ricketts meet up on Tuesday and Wednesdays nights at 5:30-7:00 at the SUU upper quadrant grass field by the General Education Building, to teach SUU Students and Cedar City Community the art of swordsman ship. Is it safe? Yes, THIS NOT L.A.R.P., but there is mock weaponry to ensure safety among those who want to learn. There is no dressing up or magic required at all, the focus is on the martial art aspect. If you want to come by and have fun or learn a few self defense techniques in regards to swordsmanship then The SUU Boffering club is where you will want to meet!
The main focus is about martial art aspect of sword play, what happens is the club will teach the techniques, movements, and strategic placements to a practitioner. The club teaches by fun and experience, not pencil and paper or grades, the club usually does live demonstrations of techniques and movements and after the students will perform, but the course is defiantly a learn at your own pace hands on type course.
What martial art style does the club teach? It mainly teaches basic blocks and offensive movements. The styles range from Fencing types to Samurai types, even Jedi if you want. Russell Ricketts who is the president is a firm believer in this idea " You cannot teach one style and expect it to match everything, combat is not about learning one perfect form, but realistically adapting to the new circumstances during combat."
Russell Ricketts usually takes one person to the side at a time and gives them a fair and unbiased opinion on a person strengths and weaknesses that they could improve on, it is a very helpful way for the a person to be measured on their progress and skill. That might sound harsh, but by all means this club does not judge a person on their skill at all, the main focus is fun and learning a new skill at your own pace. There is no failures, only learning.
